The team is making a change on the blind side for Monday Night Football.
Kahlil Benson will start at Left Tackle against Denver, stepping in for Josh Simmons.
WHY THE CHANGE
Josh Simmons won’t be available for Monday night’s matchup. The team has not released full details on his status yet, but the coaching staff is turning to Benson to fill the spot.
Benson has been cross-training all camp at tackle and guard. His versatility and work in preseason made him the top option to protect the quarterback’s blind side on national TV.
Head coach on the move: “Kahlil’s earned this opportunity. He’s prepared like a starter all year. Now it’s time to go prove it.”
THE CHALLENGE: DENVER’S PASS RUSH
This is not an easy first start.
Denver brings one of the most aggressive fronts in the league. They blitz, they stunt, and their edge rushers can win 1-on-1.
For Benson, it’ll be about 3 things Monday night:
1. Footwork: Setting quickly against speed rushers
2. Communication: Working with the LG and RB/TE on chips and stunts
3. Finish: Paving lanes in the run game to help control the clock
If he holds up, it takes a ton of pressure off the entire offense.
WHAT BENSON BRINGS
Benson is a big, athletic tackle who played multiple spots in college. Coaches love his length and his mindset. He’s not flashy, but he’s technical and doesn’t panic.
This will be his first career start at LT, and it comes under the brightest lights.
WHAT IT MEANS GOING FORWARD
A strong game from Benson could earn him more reps even when Simmons returns. An O-Line needs 8 guys you trust, and Monday is his audition for that role.
Simmons’ absence is a blow — he’s been a tone-setter up front. But injuries are part of the NFL. Depth gets tested in September.
