Kansas City Chiefs survive scare to secure dramatic last-gasp win over Carolina Panthers
The Kansas City Chiefs survived a dramatic comeback by the Carolina Panthers to bounce back from last week’s loss to the Buffalo Bills.
The back-to-back Super Bowl champions led by 14 points shortly before half-time on Sunday. But Bryce Young led the 3-8 Panthers to 18 points in the second half, despite tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders being rushed to the hospital.
After Chuba Hubbard tied the game with a one-yard touchdown run – and two-point conversion – the Chiefs had 1:46 to win the game.
Patrick Mahomes led Kansas City down the field with 33-yard scramble which took Travis Kelce and Co deep into Carolina territory.
The Chiefs reached the Panthers 13-yard line before giving backup kicker Spencer Shrader a chance to seal victory.
With two seconds on the clock, the 25-year-old made no mistake from 31 yards. The win means the Chiefs are now 10-1 for the season.
Andy Reid’s team saw their unbeaten run end last week, when they were beaten by the Buffalo Bills.
But the Super Bowl champions returned to winning ways in Charlotte, despite tempers appearing to flare between their two biggest stars.
During the game, Kelce showed obvious frustration with Mahomes after a missed throw.
On a usual route – where Kelce stopped about 10 yards downfield – Mahomes threw to his open tight end but was a little off target. The ball hit Kelce in the hands, but he could not hold on.
As soon as the ball hit the turf, Kelce turned around and looked at Mahomes in frustration.
He threw his arms out – apparently about the trajectory of the pass – and then yelled an expletive on camera.
