Today In Hip Hop History: Lil Wayne Dropped His Debut Album ‘The Block Is Hot’ 27 Years Ago

On this date in 1999, New Orleans’ own Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., better known to the world as Lil Wayne, officially launched his solo career with the release of his debut album, Tha Block Is Hot, through Cash Money Records and Universal Records.

Twenty-seven years later, the project remains a defining moment in Southern Hip Hop history, introducing the world to a teenage MC who would eventually become one of the most influential and commercially successful rappers of his generation.

At just 17 years old, Wayne was already a seasoned member of the Cash Money family, having sharpened his lyrical skills alongside Juvenile, B.G., and Turk as part of the Hot Boys.
