The Money

This is where it gets crazy.

Knies, 23, is 6’3”, 210 lbs and coming off a career-high *23 goals and 66 points in 79 games*. He’s beloved in Toronto and just started a six-year, $46.5M deal at *$7.75M AAV* through 2031.

Marchenko, 26, is also 6’3” and posted nearly identical numbers — *27 goals and 67 points in 76 games* last season — on a bargain $3.85M cap hit. But he told Columbus he would not re-sign long-term.

Toronto solved that problem in one hour.

Marchenko’s agent Dan Milstein announced Monday night that Marchenko signed a *six-year, $75 million extension with Toronto at $12.5M AAV* starting in 2027-28. That makes him higher paid than Mikko Rantanen, Kyle Connor, and Mitch Marner.

Why Both Teams Did It

*For Toronto:* It’s pure upside. Marchenko led Columbus in goals in each of the last three seasons, has 102 goals in 292 career games, and is in the 93rd percentile in NHL EDGE speed. He is a natural right-shot finisher — exactly what Toronto lacked behind Matthews and Nylander. GM John Chayka is betting the 27/67 guy is better than the 23/66 guy.

*For Columbus:* It’s control and cap relief. After signing Adam Fantilli to a six-year, $13.75M deal last week, Columbus was over the cap. Moving Wood and Merzlikins gets them compliant. And they get a younger, heavier power forward who scored 52 goals over the past two seasons and is locked up for six more years. Per The Athletic, Don Waddell told teams he would only move Marchenko for immediate NHL help, not futures.

The Fan Reaction

This one hurts in Toronto. Knies has 67 goals and 160 points in 240 career games since being drafted 57th overall in 2021. He was supposed to be the next core piece.

But Marchenko is the best player in the deal right now. If he scores 35 next to Auston Matthews, no one will remember the price.

If he doesn’t? This will be the trade Toronto talks about for a decade.
