These Two 6’3” Wingers Just Posted Nearly Identical Seasons — 27 Goals & 67 Points vs. 23 Goals & 66 Points — Yet One Is 26 and Still on a Bargain Deal While the Other Is 23 and Just Locked Up a Massive Long-Term Contract… and Now They’re at the Center of Exploding Trade Rumors Between the Leafs and Blue Jackets
*These Two 6’3″ Wingers Just Posted Nearly Identical Seasons — And Now They’re at the Center of Exploding Leafs-Jackets Trade Rumors*
Two 6’3″ wingers. Two nearly identical stat lines. Two totally different contracts. One blockbuster rumor that could shake the Eastern Conference before puck drop Tuesday.
The Toronto Maple Leafs and Columbus Blue Jackets are reportedly “deep in discussions” on a trade that would swap *Kirill Marchenko and Matthew Knies*, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Monday afternoon.
The regular season begins Tuesday. Both teams must submit cap-compliant rosters by 5 p.m. ET Monday.
The Tale of the Tape
It’s one of the weirdest comps you’ll see:
*Kirill Marchenko — Columbus Blue Jackets*
Age: 26
2025-26: *27 Goals & 67 Points in 76 games*
Height: 6’3″ Right Wing
Contract: Bargain deal — $3.85 million cap hit for 2026-27, pending UFA next summer
Status: Led or co-led Columbus in goals the past three seasons, but has been noncommittal about remaining in Columbus. His agent Dan Milstein made it clear at the 2026 Draft that Marchenko doesn’t plan to sign long-term in Columbus.
*Matthew Knies — Toronto Maple Leafs*
Age: 23
2025-26: *23 Goals & 66 Points in 79 games*
Height: 6’3″ Power Forward — nearly 30 pounds heavier than Marchenko
Contract: Massive long-term lockup — Signed through 2031 at *$7.75 million annual cap hit*. Entering Year 2 of a 6-year, $46.5M deal.
Status: Third on the Leafs in scoring last year, but has been the subject of trade rumors for the better part of a year, dating back to before John Chayka replaced Brad Treliving.
One is 26 on a bargain. One is 23 locked up for six more years. Both put up 66-67 points.
Why This Trade Is Happening
*Columbus’s perspective:* Don Waddell doesn’t want futures. Per The Athletic’s Aaron Portzline, Waddell told other teams Marchenko is available only for immediate scoring help, and he wants an NHL player back instead of picks and prospects. Knies gives them a ready-made, younger power forward — 67 goals and 160 points in 240 career games — who is cost-controlled through his prime.
The Jackets were also pushed over the salary cap after inking Adam Fantilli to a six-year, $13.75M deal last week.
*Toronto’s perspective:* Natural right-shot scoring. Marchenko has topped 20 goals in each of his four seasons and had a career-high 31 goals and 74 points in 2024-25. He would be a legitimate top-line threat from the right side next to Toronto’s playmakers. The catch? Toronto needs an extension. The Leafs have reportedly been given permission to talk to Marchenko’s agent, and those talks are expected to pick up this afternoon. No extension is in place yet.
The Extra Piece
If the deal goes through, Toronto will also reportedly receive 32-year-old goaltender *Elvis Merzlikins*, who is entering the final year of his contract and is currently out indefinitely with no timetable for a return after offseason shoulder surgery.
Merzlikins lost the starter job to Jet Greaves last year and failed his physical at the start of camp. It’s largely a cap maneuver to make the money work — Knies carries just under $4M more than Marchenko this season.
It’s rare you see a trade of two players this similar in size and production, but this different in contract and timeline. 27 & 67 on a $3.85M expiring deal vs. 23 & 66 on a $7.75M long-term deal.
Opening night is tomorrow. Don’t be surprised if one of them is wearing the opposite jersey.
