The most important global music awards are back. The Recording Academy of America announced on November 8 the nominees for its famous awards, the Grammys, which next February 2 will hold its 67th awards gala at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California. The 13,000 members of the Academy have selected their favorites for this year and the list includes many women who have been triumphing at the Grammys for years, such as Beyoncé (who tops the list with 11 nominations) and Taylor Swift, who will contest the main categories. Other artists who have been making a name for themselves recently are Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX and Chappell Roan. The Beatles also received a surprise nomination more than half a century after the Fab Four broke up. In addition, this year’s Person of the Year award will go to the American folk-rock group Grateful Dead.

Beyoncé and her album Cowboy Carter garnered 11 nominations across all the main categories: best song, record, and album of the year, plus a nod in the country category; Billie Eilish has seven with her third album (and also third to be nominated), Hit Me Hard and Soft, as do Kendrick Lamar, Charli XCX and Post Malone. Swift has six nominations thanks to The Tortured Poets Department, tying her with two of the year’s biggest sensations, Sabrina Carpenter (with her album Short N’ Sweet) and Chappell Roan (The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess). With Cowboy Carter, Beyoncé, 43, has become the most-nominated artist in Grammy history, with 99 nominations. She has already won 32, also a record.

The most important and hotly contested award is Album of the Year, and here 34-year-old Swift has broken her own record. If last year she achieved a milestone by placing one of her albums among the candidates for album of the year for a sixth time, tied with Barbra Streisand, this year she has scored a seventh entry with The Tortured Poets Department, which she announced on the stage of the Grammys earlier this year. In that category, Swift will compete with Beyoncé, André 3000, Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX, Jacob Collier, Chappell Roan and Billie Eilish. In previous editions, Beyoncé has lost out in this category to Adele and Harry Styles. Swift, on the other hand, has won four of the six best album awards she has been nominated for, more than Frank Sinatra or Stevie Wonder. Despite their long careers and multiple nominations, this is the first time that Swift and Beyoncé have competed in the top category.

One of the surprises of the year was the nomination of the Beatles thanks to the song Now and Then, in which Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr recovered an old recording of John Lennon’s voice, to which George Harrison’s guitar had been added later. The group broke up over 50 years ago, but thanks to the new song, which sparked controversy over the possible use of artificial intelligence, they have achieved their 24th nomination. As it is in the category of Record of the Year, another of the most hotly contested, Now and Then will have a tough time. The Beatles will compete against Beyoncé’s Texas Hold’ Em, Sabrina Carpenter’s Espresso, Charli XCX’s 360, Billie Eilish’s Birds of a Feather, Kendrick Lamarr’s Not Like Us, Chappell Roan’s Good Luck, Babe! and Swift’s Fortnight, with Post Malone.

For Song of the Year, nominations go to Billie Eilish’s Birds of a Feather, Swift’s Fortnight featuring Post Malone, Beyoncé’s Texas Hold ‘Em, Kendrick’s Not Like Us, Chappell Roan’s Good Luck, Babe!, Shaboozey’s A Bar Song (Tipsy), Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ Die With a Smile, and Carpenter’s Please Please Please.

For New Artist, the battle will be between Roan and Carpenter, who are competing against Shaboozey, lyricist Raye, rapper Doechii, Texas trio Khruangbin, songwriter Teddy Swins and rocker Benson Boone, famous for his hit Beautiful Things. Both Carpenter and Roan, the phenomena of the year, have accumulated six nominations each.

In addition to the Grammys, the Recording Academy also holds the Latin Grammys, focused, as the name suggests, on Latin music. After passing through Seville last year, the next edition will be held next week, on Thursday, November 14, in Miami. But the main Grammy awards also recognize Latin music. This year’s Latin pop album nominees are Anitta, Luis Fonsi, Kany Garcia, Kali Uchis and Shakira, who is the favorite for Las mujeres ya no lloran, while in the Mexican and Tejano music category, Chiquis, Carín León, Peso Pluma and Jessi Uribe are nominated.

Harvey Mason Jr, the Academy’s executive director, has spoken of the importance of these awards as a “global celebration of music.” “The people who create the music deserve an organization that cares for them and champions them and yes, celebrates them as well,” he explained. “It’s an award for music people honoring music people,” he said before announcing some of the 94 categories. Among others, artists such as Kylie Minogue, Hayley Williams of the band Paramore, Ben Platt, Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day or Victoria Monet, announced several nominations. This year, the Academy has introduced new features, as more than 2,000 new members have entered, including many women. In addition, they have adjusted the main categories. In the four most important — Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Record of the Year and New Artist — the number of nominees has been reduced from 10 to eight.
