A royal expert has revealed the cheeky joke Prince William made to Kate Middleton’s dad Michael Middleton before he handed her over – and Prince Harry’s touching words. It’s completely normal to feel nervous on your wedding day – and probably more so if you’re marrying into the royal family with more than 26 million people watching on.
Luckily then then Kate Middleton had her dad Michael by her side when she made her way into Westminster Abbey on 29 April 2011 to marry Prince William. She looked spectacular wearing her Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen wedding dress, which she paired with a floral, lace-trimmed veil, as she walked down the aisle holding her dad’s hand.
But when Michael handed his daughter over to her husband, he looked a little overwhelmed. William, on the other hand, looked as cool as ever, and cracked a joke to calm his father-in-law’s nerves. According to Marcia Moody’s biography, Kate:
An Autobiography, William greeted the pair by saying: “Just a quiet family wedding, then,” in reference to the fact that a staggering 26 million people were said to be watching around the world.
William’s brother and best man also had some touching words to say as they stood at the altar. “Harry looked back as Kate started walking down the aisle and reported back to his brother, ‘Right, she is here now,’” Marcia recalls. Harry then said: “Well, she looks beautiful, I can tell you that.”
And when the couple set eyes on each other, William murmured to Kate, ‘You look beautiful.’ The ceremony went without a hitch and the 1,900 guests that attended, including the Beckhams, Joss Stone and Sir Elton John, beamed as the couple shared their first kiss as husband and wife.
They then took a quick trip in the 1902 State Landau carriage along the processional route to Buckingham Palace, while waving to well-wishers who had waited for hours to catch a glimpse of them.
During the ride, William said: “I hope I remember… It’s mad, it’s mad! “Oh my goodness it… really loud here.” Kate later said: “You look happy.”
