Hailey Bieber opened up about a health condition that she has struggled with since she was “about 19 or 20” years old.

In a video that the wife of Justin Bieber posted this week on TikTok, the 27-year-old model shared what her face looked like during a recent flare-up and how her skin improved after she used a few topical creams, some of which she said her dermatologist had prescribed her. Hailey identified her years-long skincare battle as perioral dermatitis.

The condition typically presents as a red rash around a person’s mouth, according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD). The bumps that pop up on the skin can look like acne on individuals like Hailey who have light-colored skin. In addition to its visual presentation, the AAD’s description for perioral dermatitis said the rash can also “itch” and cause “a burning sensation.”

While perioral dermatitis is not contagious, the AAD said it is not known what its specific cause is.

In her TikTok video, Hailey showed her make-up-free face to demonstrate what a “pretty bad flare-up” looked like for her. She then explained that she used an Azelaic Acid prescription cream at night and a prescribed Clindamycin topical antibiotic for the daytime to combat the rash. Her video then switched to a new view of Hailey’s face, which she said showed improvement after she used the tools at her disposal to treat it.

In addition to her prescribed treatments, Hailey explained that the “only other thing” she uses to combat a perioral dermatitis flare-up is her own Rhode skincare brand’s Glazing Milk, which she described as a “super gentle” cream that “helps calm the skin” and “doesn’t irritate it any further.”

Fans on TikTok, some of whom also battle perioral dermatitis, were quick to praise Hailey for opening up about her condition.
