In a lengthy Instagram post, Mulroney said she has found “hope” by getting sober and dealing with her long-term social anxiety and other mental health issues. She also suggested she’s had to struggle with her recovery without the help of friends who are “distant” and who don’t “even ask how you are.”
“But, thankfully, you find the things that truly matter,” said Mulroney. ”Everyone wonders if one of Mulroney’s “distant” friends is the Duchess of Sussex. Not only has Meghan become geographically distant after moving to Montecito, California, but Mulroney previously hinted that she and Meghan had a falling out last year, writing in a cryptic Instagram post in June: “Life changes. You lose friends. You lose pieces of yourself that you never imagined would be gone. … And then, without even realizing it, these pieces come back. New love enters. Better friends come along. And a stronger, wiser you, is staring back in the mirror.”
The tight bond that Mulroney and Meghan once enjoyed was challenged by the fallout from Mulroney’s “White privilege” scandal, Us Weekly reported. The scandal erupted when lifestyle blogger Sasha Exeter alleged Mulroney exhibited “very problematic behavior” and threatened her professionally when Exeter encouraged Mulroney to speak out in favor of Black Lives Matter during protests over police violence. Exeter also said she found it perplexing that Mulroney was silent on social media regarding issues of racial injustice, considering her close friendship with Markle, “arguably one of the most famous black women in the world.”
Meghan might not have been pleased that Mulroney invoked her name in her attempt to repair her image when issuing a public apology to Exeter, Us Weekly reported.Mulroney wrote: “As I told you privately, I have lived a very public and personal experience with my closest friend where race was front and center. It was deeply educational. I learned a lot from that. I promise to continue to learn and listen on how I can use my privilege to elevate and support Black voices.”
A source told Us Weekly that “Meghan could not get over” Jessica bringing up their relationship in the discourse with Sasha. The insider noted that the former TV actress found it “hugely offensive.”As the scandal cost Mulroney her position at “Good Morning America” and other job opportunities, a source also told Us Weekly that Meghan was ready to “distance herself” from her once and for all.
In her new Instagram post, Mulroney also took digs at “any company who erased me without investigation” and decried “what the press made me go through” — even as she said she didn’t “blame anyone” else for her troubles. She insists she is “consistently working on myself,” thanked those who offered support and declared, “My life is happy again.”
Mulroney, 42, and Meghan, 40, became tight friends when the former American actress moved to Toronto in 2011 to film her USA Network series “Suits.” The women bonded over a shared love for fitness and fashion, and Meghan reportedly looked up to Mulroney and relied on her advice for shaping content for her lifestyle blog, The Tig, Us Weekly said.
Other reports have said that Mulroney, the daughter-in-law of former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, introduced Meghan to the world of Canadian high society, a stepping stone to U.K. high society and the opportunity to meet her future husband, Prince Harry.
Mulroney was a special guest at Meghan and Harry’s 2018 wedding, and her twin sons served as page boys in the royal ceremony. Mulroney also was among the celebrity guests at Meghan’s lavish baby shower in New York City in 2019, along with Amal Clooney, Serena Williams and Gayle King. But the friendship may have broken down after Meghan and Harry left the U.K. and moved to the United States in March 2020.
Critics of Meghan, who call her a social climber, say it wouldn’t be out of character for her to dispense with Mulroney if the friendship had become inconvenient or was no longer of use.Meghan is famously estranged from her father, Thomas Markle, as well as her older half-sister, Samantha Markle, though the duchess’s defenders would say she has good reason from staying away from those two. Critics have long found it strange that no members of Meghan’s family attended her wedding to Harry, other than her mother, Doria Ragland.
Meghan also ended her friendship with childhood friend Ninaki Priddy, who was the maid of honor at Meghan’s first wedding to Trevor Engelson, the Daily Mail and other outlets have reported. After Meghan moved to Canada to star in her first TV show, she gained what Priddy called an increasing sense of “entitlement.”
