The latest incident involving an Ivy League graduate arrested in connection with a CEO’s murder centers around Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old former student of the University of Pennsylvania. Mangione was taken into custody in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on Monday, December 9, 2024, after being identified as a person of interest in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s where an employee recognized him and called the police. At the time of his arrest, he was found with items that linked him to the crime, including a ghost gun, a silencer, and multiple fake IDs. Surveillance video had previously shown the suspected killer waiting for Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel, executing him in what has been described as a “brazen, targeted attack.” Mangione’s background includes a notable academic record, having graduated cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania with degrees in computer and information science. His LinkedIn profile lists him as a data engineer at a car company in California, though he was recently using an address in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Mangione apparently harbored anti-capitalist sentiments and was influenced by quotes from Ted Kaczynski, the “Unabomber.” His possible motives include resentment towards the medical community for how it treated a sick relative. However, he has not yet been officially charged in connection with Thompson’s murder, only on unrelated firearms charges in Pennsylvania. The investigation into Thompson’s murder continues, with authorities piecing together Mangione’s movements and motives.
