Chiefs Coach Needs to Be Fired After Major Admission About Offensive Strategy

Published

on

The Kansas City Chiefs’ offense earned significant criticism throughout the regular season before imploding during the Super Bowl, and now fans and the team’s brass alike are left scratching their heads about what went wrong.

Patrick Mahomes’ incredible deep TD to Xavier Worthy in the closing moments of the loss was a perfect microcosm of the season. That exact play is what was missing all season long, but the Chiefs couldn’t find any success with it until it was too late. Mahomes averaged a career-low 6.8 yards per attempt and everything generally looked difficult throughout the campaign

Well, we may now know why. Chiefs passing game coordinator Joe Bleymaier spoke to ESPN prior to the Super Bowl and make an embarrassing reveal that sheds some light into why play-calling might’ve been so frequently mediocre

Chiefs Coach Makes Embarrassing Admission About Coaching Patrick Mahomes
“You feel the burden as a coach and as you’re putting a game plan together to not waste his abilities, Bleymaier said. “To not go through a season where you don’t give him the opportunity. To not screw it up as the coaching staff. So rather than feeling like this just unbridled excitement that we could do anything, it’s actually more like a terror, like we cannot be the reason that we screwed this guy up or this team up

On their face, these comments aren’t inherently a problem. It’s wise for Bleymaier to realize the gravity of the situation and the importance of effectively coaching Mahomes. That said, it’s felt for two years now that the offense was being coached scared.

Bleymaier has been the passing game coordinator for two years, the same two years that Matt Nagy has been the offensive coordinator. Perhaps it’s merely an explainable coincidence that those two seasons coincided with the two worst of Mahomes’ career, or maybe there’s a deeper conclusion to draw.

It’s true that last year’s group had perhaps the worst collection of wide receivers in the league. It’s also true that this season’s team saw an onslaught of injuries to numerous key offensive players. Because of the specific circumstances of each campaign, Bleymaier and Nagy are expected to stay on and get another opportunity in 2025.
