U.S. Senators have officially called for the removal of President Trump under the 25th Amendment, which mandates that Trump’s close associates must declare him unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.
Washington, D.C. – In a stunning escalation amid growing concerns over President Donald Trump’s mental fitness, several Democratic lawmakers, including U.S. Senator Ed Markey (D-Mass.), have publicly demanded the invocation of the 25th Amendment to remove him from office.
The calls come in response to a recently revealed letter from Trump to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, where the president linked his aggressive push to acquire Greenland to his disappointment over not winning the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, stating he “no longer feel[s] an obligation to think purely of peace.”
Senator Markey posted on social media, “Invoke the 25th Amendment,” alongside a report on the letter, emphasizing the perceived threat to national security. Joining him, Representatives Yassamin Ansari (D-Ariz.), Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-Calif.), and Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) echoed the demand, with Ansari describing Trump as “extremely mentally ill” and warning that his actions are “putting all of our lives at risk.”
The 25th Amendment allows the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet to declare the president unfit, potentially leading to Vice President JD Vance assuming power if Congress affirms the decision.
White House officials have dismissed the calls as partisan attacks, with no indication from Vance or Cabinet members of supporting such a move.
This marks a revival of similar demands from Trump’s previous term, though experts note the high threshold for invocation makes it unlikely without broad executive buy-in.
